COMMON ORTHOTIC

DIABETIC FOOT CONDITIONS

Poor Circulation

Patients with diabetes are encouraged to pay special attention to their foot health. Neuropathy and poor circulation are two major concerns. Neuropathy can lead to loss of sensation, and the inability to feel heat, cold, or pain. Minor cuts or scrapes can cause serious infections. Poor circulation to the feet can cause those wounds to heal slowly and be more prone to infections and ulcers.

Calluses

A callus is caused when there is an accumulation of dead skins cells that harden and thicken over an area of the foot. Calluses are most often formed in response to excessive pressure or friction, acting as protection for that area of the body. As it pertains to the foot, calluses are most often found on the main pressure points, including the ball of the foot, heel, and the inside of the big toe.

Neuropathy

25% of patients with diabetes develop foot problems related to the disease. One such problem is known as Diabetic Neuropathy, with the most common type called Peripheral Neuropathy. This affects the peripheral nerves and results in the impairment of proper function of these sensory and motor nerves. Suffers of this condition can experience a loss of feeling or numbness in the hands or feet.
